THE ABCs OF EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS
Workshop and a 1 to 1 Coaching Follow Up Session

with Alex Sutherland

Date:   Tuesday 2 & Wednesday 3 March 2010
Time:   09:00 - 17:00hrs
Venue: Duxton Hotel, 100 Grey's Avenue, AUCKLAND

This event is also being run in Wellington in August 2010

Each leader's day includes a wide range of leadership challenges that, while they seem to be diverse, have one thing in common: They require that leaders communicate effectively, face-to-face with their colleagues, balancing courage and consideration. Now research focusing on tens of thousands of public and private sector leaders has generated common sense tools to help leaders and managers interact with others.

Join Alex Sutherland, Director of Lines of Sight, to learn about and apply the powerful Behaviour Minder Feedback tool in this two day workshop "The ABCs of Effective Relationships".

At this workshop you will:

  • build your ability to use a range of communication behaviours appropriately and effectively ‘in the moment’
  • gain insights into the way in which you engage in key relationships in your work and your wider life
  • learn specific behaviours that you can use immediately to enhance those relationships
  • prepare for a discussion with each of those who have given you feedback via the Behaviour Minder tool
  • practice a planning method for initiating significant conversations and meetings
  • master a practical model for how to give effective feedback.

Furthermore you will have a follow up coaching session with Alex to reinforce what you have learned and to identify actions to implement the learning immediately.

The ABCs of Effective Relationships is rooted in the simple power and elegance of an awareness of our behaviour and its consequences:

  • Awareness increased by using data collected from a unique, non-anonymous, 360-degree assessment
  • Behaviour is developed by reviewing your interactions in real-world cases and role plays
  • Consequences of many important back-home interactions are planned for and monitored using a simple tool called The Behaviour Planning Guide

It is highly interactive and experiential, featuring a mix of discussion and small group exercises. Participants will prepare for the workshop by distributing the Behaviour Minder ™ non-anonymous survey to colleagues.

About the presenter:

Alex Sutherland is a graduate of three New Zealand universities. His work experience is as broad and varied as his academic studies. It has included time as a Presbyterian minister, Family Court counselling coordinator, organisational change designer, human resources manager, and executive secretary for a major bank. He combines personal and professional interests as a board member of the Fringe Arts Trust and Footnote Dance. Alex is an Associate Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management and on the faculty of the NZIM Southern’s Advance Management Programme.

As an executive mentor, Alex works with individuals and with teams to foster influential interpersonal skills, strategic planning that balances visionary thinking with down-to-earth application, well-executed change initiatives, and team effectiveness.

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP FOR SHAPING TEAM CULTURE

Workshop facilitated by Ian Brooks

Date:   Tuesday 4 May 2010
Time:   8:45am - 5.00pm
Venue: Space 1, Level 1, Holiday Inn Hotel, 75 Featherston Street, WELLINGTON

We are delighted to offer once again this one day workshop designed for senior managers who lead teams and who are motivated to shape team culture.

A significant theme emerging from the Leadership Development Centre research has been a lack of appreciation of the link between effective leadership and shaping organisational culture. This workshop has been designed to respond to this gap.

Introduction:

A team's culture is critical to its success because it is made up of the mix of team attitudes and behaviours deemed necessary to achieve desired results. Team aspirations, norms, values, beliefs, everyday working language and processes are key elements of team culture. Having a shared understanding of these elements enhances team cohesion and motivation, streamlines communication within the team, and influences communication beyond the team. Involving all team members in the development of their culture increases alignment between individual and team values, and enhances the sense of team ownership and commitment. This in turn has an impact on the culture of the wider organisation.

Purpose:

To explore the various levers and processes that can be used to shape team culture and highlight how Appreciative Inquiry can be used as a collaborative, strengths-based approach for achieving positive change within teams. Drawing on Appreciative Inquiry philosophy and methodology, as well as approaches drawn from conventional organisation development theory, participants will develop the awareness, skills and knowledge to assist them in leading culture change interventions in their teams.

Agenda:

* What is team culture and how is it created?
* The link between team culture and performance
* OD approches and key levers for shaping team culture
* Introduction to the Appreciative Inquiry philosophy and process
* Appreciative Inquiry exercise to uncover key success factors for shaping team culture
* Application of traditional processes / levers and the Appreciative Inquiry approach to workshop participants’   culture shaping challenges

About the facilitator:

Dr Ian Brooks is a Christchurch-based leadership and team development consultant. His areas of special interest include interpersonal and group dynamics, and in helping leaders build high performing teams. Ian has worked in a teambuilding role with over a hundred different teams in recent years. Ian is also an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Department of Management at the University of Canterbury. He teaches courses in the MBA Programme on group and interpersonal dynamics, and team leadership. In 2005 he won the University of Canterbury Teaching Award, and was nominated by the UC Students’ Association for the same award in 2006.

In May 2005 he became the first resident New Zealander to be accepted as a member of the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science in the United States, which is recognised internationally as being a world leader in the training of organisation development practitioners. Prior to returning to university in 1994 to complete a Ph.D. on the topic of culture change, Ian spent eight years in senior management and chief executive roles in the private sector. This real-world experience ensures that he understands the practical issues faced by leaders and their teams. Ian has a PhD, BA, MBA (Hons), MEd (Dist) Cert Counselling, and a Certificate in Experience-based Learning and Training from the NTL Institute. He is the co-author with Professor Bob Manthei of the book The Solution-focused Manager (2005). He is a member of the NZ Association for Psychological Type and NTL.

Who should attend:

Senior managers from our member agencies who lead teams.

Priority booking will be given to our Nominated Managers up until Friday 29 January. After this date registrations will be open to all staff from our member agencies.

Please note the running of this workshop is subject to minimum participant numbers being met.
