Māori values are based on tradition and beliefs that have been handed down through the generations. They are central to the guiding principles of Te Ao Māori – the Māori world. These are holistic in nature and are not stand alone which means that one action or behaviour can span multiple values. Auahatanga

To show love, empathy, respect or kindness to others.

Katiakitanga

Preserving, sheltering, and protecting in relation to the environmental issues and guardianship

Kotahitanga

The concept of oneness, unity, togetherness, solidarity, and collective action

Manaakitanga

Reciprocity of kindness, respect, humility, responsible hospitality, caring for others and the environment

Māramatanga

Enlightenment, insight, understanding

Mōhiotanga

Knowledge, understanding, awareness, insight

Tika

To be correct, true, right, just and fair

Tikanga Māori

Cultural authenticity and doing things the right way from a Māori perspective

Wairuatanga

All aspects of the Māori world have an ever-present spiritual dimension which pervades all Māori values.
