Political Neutrality

Political neutrality is a cornerstone of an effective and trusted public service. It ensures that public servants can serve the government of the day in a professional and impartial way - while maintaining the confidence of future governments and the public.

Learning from the Masterclass

The Political Neutrality Masterclass brought together public sector leaders to explore what political neutrality looks like in practice, featuring insights and reflections from Andrew Kibblewhite, Secretary for Justice and Chief Executive, and Rachel Hayward, Secretary of the Cabinet and Clerk of the Executive Council.

Although the live event has taken place, a series of learning resources from the session are now available for you to explore. These include:

  • Video clips featuring insights from the speakers
  • Reflection questions to prompt discussion and application in your own context

These resources are designed to support individual reflection or team conversations about how political neutrality is understood, modelled, and upheld in the public service today.
