Self-paced digital learning resources that support all public servants to build a basic, shared understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and its use in the public sector.

The AI Development Series are self‑paced digital learning resources that also form the foundation of the online AI Development Programme.

The AI Development Series is structured into 4 sections:

  1. Introduction to AI
Learn the fundamentals of AI, including what it is (and isn’t), key types of AI, and how it is already being used in the public sector. It also introduces emerging concepts like agentic AI and explores what these developments could mean for the way we work.

  2. Safe and responsible AI
Understand the Public Service AI Framework and the principles that guide safe and responsible AI use. This module connects principles to legislation and public sector values, with practical guidance for applying them in day-to-day work.

  3. Putting AI into practice
Build practical skills for using AI tools effectively, including writing prompts, refining outputs, and critically evaluating results. The focus is on applying AI safely, responsibly, and with confidence in real work scenarios.

  4. AI now and in the future
Explore how AI is being used across the New Zealand Public Service, including governance approaches and agency examples. Reflect on your role, responsibilities, and the opportunities AI presents for improving services and outcomes.

We expect this learning to be available in July, you can sign up to our newsletter or LDC's LinkedIn for updates.

The focus of this learning on confidence and awareness, not technical expertise. The learning supports public servants to engage with AI thoughtfully, ask better questions, and understand their responsibilities when using or interacting with AI‑enabled tools.
